VISION

Bike Newton aims to promote bicycling as a viable method of transportation in Newton. Bicycling should be safe and convenient for all.

GOALS

Bikeways Create central bikeways, especially north-south routes, as recommended in all Newton Bicycle Accommodation Plan Drafts(map.pdf). Strategically located bikeways would link all of Newton’s villages together and make biking much safer for doing errands, commuting and recreation.

Incentives Provide incentives for bicycle-sharing programs and bicycle delivery services.

Connectivity Create bicycle connectivity (clearly marked bike lanes) among the city’s major destinations---parks, schools, libraries, T stations, business districts, the Charles River Bike Path and bordering cities and towns.

Yell for help Establish a volunteer-staffed hotline for reporting the location of roadway obstructions (potholes, sunken storm drains, gravel, sand, broken pavement, fallen tree limbs) that put bicyclists at risk.

Coordinator             Appoint a Bicycle Coordinator to facilitate communication among city and state agencies, bicycle organizations and neighboring communities to make bicycling a viable transportation alternative.

Lock Greatly increase the number of free and privately-sponsored, conveniently-located bike racks, and add secure bike parking areas in parking lots.

Education                 Educate citizens about mutual responsibilities of motorists and bicyclists regarding specifics of bicycle safety and about speed limit laws. Institute road closings on weekends to encourage bicycling.

Signage                     Create roadway markings and signs to make drivers alert to cyclists, and post city-wide default speed limit, especially at entry points.
