SUMMARY:Group Ride - MCRT - Weston - Wayland
DESCRIPTION:Join us for what could the last official Bike Newton group ride of the year.   We will start in Newtonville\, head out Commonwealth Ave. towards Weston\, ending up on the Mass Central Rail Trail (MCRT) going west.   We’ll bike to Wayland on the MCRT\, turn around and head back to Waltham\, eventually getting to the Charles River Trail and then back to Newtonville.  To celebrate the end of another great summer biking season (and the start of winter biking!) all riders are invited to come to  the Ride Leaders house in Newtonville\, in the back yard for some hot cider and snacks. \nMeet in front of the Star Market on Austin St. in Newtonville\, and we’ll leave at 10:00 am\, Saturday morning.  Dress warmly — it might be cold out.  This is a family-friendly\, “no-rider-left-behind” ride and all ages are invited\, but all young children must be accompanied by an adult. DESCRIPTION:LivableStreets Alliance is a wonderful nonprofit located in the Metro Boston area. SUMMARY:Group Ride: Infrastructure Tour with Northeastern's STAN!
DESCRIPTION:Sustainable Transportation At Northeastern (STAN) and the Boston Cyclist’s Union are collaborating yet again for another Fall Bike Tour! The ride will be led by BCU board member and professor\, Peter Furth. We will learn about bike infrastructure along the way with a focus especially on Cambridge’s new Broadway bike way.   This will be a fun\, informative and relaxed ride open to everyone! DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special holiday weekend ride we call “Bites and Sounds of the City”.    This ride will include much of the Charles River bike path\, and a stop in Boston’s Chinatown for a dim sum brunch\, and will continue on to the scenic Maritime Park in the Seaport District to view the harbor and check out a bit of the Boston Jazz Festival.  You will be able to see how accessible many great attractions in Boston are\, using your bike to get around! \nAfter stopping in Chinatown\, riders will have to option to head directly back to Newton\, rather than continuing on to the Seaport District.  There may be a leader for that return trip\, but that is not guaranteed.  Riders also have the option of taking the commuter rail (with their bike) back to Newton from South Station rather than riding back.   Worcester/Framingham trains to Newton depart South Station at 1:00\, 3:00 and 5:00pm on Saturday. \nMeet in front of the Star Market at 33 Austin St\, in Newtonville\, and we’ll leave  at 10:00am. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special Wednesday evening ride which will include 3 exciting events:   First we’ll bike a short route to Moody St. in Waltham and meet up with some of our fellow bikers from Bike Together Waltham.  Secondly\, we’ll ride the wonderful new bike lane which is the core of the Washington Street Pilot between Newtonville and West Newton.  Thirdly\, we’ll end the ride at Cabot’s on Washington street and chat it up with our Waltham peers over a bite to eat and/or some ice cream. \nMeet in front of Star Market at 33 Austin St. in Newtonville\, and we will leave at 6:15 pm.  We will proceed to Washington St. and then ride west on the new bike lane to West Newton.  Then we’ll head up Waltham St.\, where we’ll meet up with the Waltham group at Margarita’s Restaurant at 211 Moody St. at 7pm.   Bike Together Waltham will then take the lead and we’ll head back to West Newton\, and bike west on the new Washington St. bike lane\, ending up at Cabots! \nThis is a family-friendly\, “no-rider-left-behind” ride and all ages are invited\, but all young children must be accompanied by an adult. SUMMARY:Minuteman Ride to Concord
DESCRIPTION:Be part of re-enacting revolutionary local history – on your bike! \nIn 1775\, on the night of April 18 into the wee hours of ApriI 19\, militia members from around what is now Greater Boston responded to an alarm spread by Paul Revere\, William Dawes and Samuel Prescott. The British were heading to Concord to seize militia weapons and supplies. Minute men from more than 20 communities\, including Danvers\, marched in some cases over 25 miles to stop the British in Concord and sparked this nation’s fight for independence.Can you imagine how much faster they could have made the trip to Concord if they had bikes? This year\, during Bike Month in May\, you will have a chance to experience just that. \nOn Saturday\, May 17\, a group of cyclists will re-enact the rides of Paul Revere\, William Dawes and Samuel Prescott to spread the warning that “the Regulars are coming out!” To complete this re-enactment\, bicyclists are invited to ride to Concord from surrounding cities and towns. \nBikeNewton will be assembling a contingent of “MinuteBikers” to join the fun and historical re-enactment in Concord.  So mark your calendars for Saturday\, May 17.   We’ll leave from Star Market on Austin St. in Newtonville at 10:00 am.    Ride ends at the Concord Museum\, 53 Cambridge Tpke.  There will be many bikers arriving from a number of towns between 11 and 1pm — there will be quite a crowd!   A festival open to all will start up at 11:30 and is expected to go until at least 2 p.m. There will be music\, a small expo area\, and food and beverages will be available for purchase. \nThis is a family-friendly\, “no-rider-left-behind” ride and all ages are invited\, but all young children must be accompanied by an adult. SUMMARY:Group Ride to Copley Sq. for Bike Safety
DESCRIPTION:Dear Bike Newton community\, \nOur hearts are broken. As many of you have heard\, John Corcoran\, a Newton resident\, was killed on Monday while biking on the Charles River shared used path in Cambridge\, just outside the BU boathouse by the BU bridge. The details are scant\, but a driver swerved their car off the road onto the sidewalk and hit John. \nThis is a highly used area by cyclists\, walkers and runners\, for recreation\, commuting and students getting to/from class and other activities. It has been problematic for decades given the high speeds of motorists on Memorial Drive coupled with the very narrow and congested sidewalk without any kind of protection or speed controls. \nCritical Mass Boston is having a bike ride Friday evening to protest the dangerous conditions that led to this death. The ride starts at Boston Public Library at Copley. Critical Mass Boston will be gathering at 5:30PM and departing at 6PM. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special ride we are calling the “Tour de PictureUsNewton“ on Saturday\, September 8th at 3:00 PM.  Newton’s local arts non-profit\,  Newton Community Pride (NCP)\,  has produced a public art exhibit called  #PictureUsNewton and we are sharing in the fun. \n#PictureUsNewton consistsof a number of works of art done by local artists\, which have been placed in 12 locations all around the city of Newton.    NCP invites you to check out these public art murals and invite you to use them as “selfie stations”  where you can take photos (with bikes\, of course!).   Photos taken at any and all “selfie stations” can optionally be added to the NCP online Community Photo Album filled with faces of our diverse\, welcoming\, and BIKING city. \nOur ride will visit a total of six of these art exhibits located in various parts of the city\, and to top it off we will end up at the TRIO Courtyard in Newtonville in time to see one of NCP’s Fall Village Concerts. DESCRIPTION:Bike Newton\, in conjunction with the New England Jazz Collaborative and the Boston Harbor Islands National Park invite you to join us on Sunday Aug. 18 for a trip to Long Wharf in Boston and then to George’s Island to hear “Wild Music”.  We will leave Newtonville at 10am\, bike to Long Wharf and arrive around 11am\, then board a ferry (free with pre-registration) at approx. 11:30am\, with the ferry departing at 12 noon for Georges Island.   You can lock up your bike on Long Wharf.   (Bring a lock!)  There will be live music on the ferry to the island\, and once on the island feel free to have lunch\, explore the island\, and listen to some of Boston’s best jazz musicians play to the sound of ocean waves\, seagulls and sea breezes.  Ferries return back to Long Wharf at 3pm and 5pm.  (Check the ferry   schedule. )  Note that riders are not guaranteed a ride leader for the trip back. \nIf you plan on taking the ferry to George’s Island at 12 noon\, below is a link to the EventBrite site to sign up and reserve a free ferry ticket!  We only ask that if you do reserve a ticket for the ferry — please show up and use it\, as they are limited! \nFree ferry ticket: \nhttps://www.zeffy.com/en-US/ticketing/ca4d2434-a672-4358-9329-a5f1d48e12b3 \nThis is a family-friendly\, “no-rider-left-behind” ride and all ages are invited\, but all young children must be accompanied by an adult. SUMMARY:Sustainable Street Tour Ride
DESCRIPTION:Bike Newton invites you to join us for a fairly short but very informative group ride to the Sustainable Street Tour in Waban\, presented by Newton’s grass-roots activist environmental group Green Newton.   We will start the ride on Sunday\, June 2nd at 1:00pm\, leaving from the Newton Free Library on Homer St. in Newton Center.  We’ll bike to the start of the house tour in Waban\, meeting at the Green Newton table on Montclair Rd.\, then cycle from house to house (see Map here)\, talk to owners of the houses\, and volunteer experts who will be there.  We’ll have a Bike Newton table set up as well on Montclair Rd. and riders are invited to stay and help staff the BN table for a bit!  The full event runs from 1pm to 4pm.  For those riders who would like to get back to the library sooner\, we’ll have a group of riders heading back between 2 and 2:30. \nGreen Newton requests that those visiting the Sustainable Street Tour RSVP\, so you can receive event updates and any changes due to weather.  However RSVP is not a requirement to participate! \nMeet in front of the Newton Main Library on Homer St. in Newton Center\, and we’ll leave at 1:00pm.  This is a family-friendly\, “no-rider-left-behind” ride and all ages are invited\, but all young children must be accompanied by an adult.
