Newton Bicycle Network Plan
There have been a number of Bike Plan proposals in the last decade and a half. The 2012 Newton Bicycle Network Plan was based on feedback from the League of American Bicyclists’ Bicycle-Friendly Community program.
The main objectives of the Bicycle Network Plan were:
- To make bicycling in Newton much safer by ensuring that bicycling infrastructure will be built using the best possible design recommendations
- To increase the mileage of bicycle routes in Newton within a network of safe, low‐stress routes
- To create first‐class bicycle accommodations on critical corridors connecting points of interest, north/south and east/west.
When all the recommendations of the plan would be acted upon, 94 miles of roadway in Newton would become considerably safer for bikers of all types. According to this cost and priorities projection by a retired USDOT executive, Newton could carry out the entire plan for under half a million dollars!
The appendices of the Plan also served as an educational purpose describing different types of bicycle accommodations.
More recently, the City of Newton has since been undertaking the Bike Network Plan’s natural evolution and in 2025 renamed it the “Walk, Ride, Roll Network Plan.” That was done with the intention of advancing even further the goals of a network of safe, low‐stress routes for bicyclists and pedestrians.
Bike Newton is considered a stakeholder in the plan, and Bike Newton’s president, Ed Olhava, sits on the Advisory Council.
